Many people believe it takes different things to make a book a great novel. Although of mice and men is a short book, it sho ws on many occasions someone believing in the goodness of mankind, making it a great novel.
As it says in the nobel prize acceptance speach, " I hold that a writer who does not passionatly believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor a membership in good literature." So to write good liturature, you need to believe in man.
In the book of mice and men, george believed in lennie. He trusted that he would be good and not get into any trouble. But even though lennie tried his best, he still failed and murdered curleys wife.
Curleys dad was another good example of great liturature. When Lennie and George were late for work by an entire day, he still believed that they could be good workers and let them stay and work. Although it paid off at first, because Lennie was an amazing worker and "was as stronge as a bull", Lennie later killed Curleys wife. So his trusting in them was a bad choice in the end.
So it doesnt really matter if a book is short or not. For a book to be good literature it needs to have many examples of someone believing in mankind, even when people or actions tell them otherwise.
